English Nature (now known as Natural England) have asked for our help with identifying where Ravens and Hen Harriers are trying to nest this spring. Ravens have nested successfully in Millstone quarry for the last few years, but another nest in Ladybower quarry was destroyed last year. There were two Hen Harrier nests in the area where the Club Champs was held last November.
Both these bird species have suffered a lot of persecution in this area and any early sightings are important so that nest sites can be guarded. Last year a 24 hour watch was set up in Derwent. This didn’t affect our running in any way – access is only restricted for a few yards around each nest.
A group called Peak Nest Watch is being set up (details to follow), in the meantime contact Bob Berzins with any sightings.
