We were in danger of another three-hour outing like last week’s epic Midhopestones adventure. John likened this decision to Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow though the weather for us was somewhat more clement, no snow, no rain, we had it easy. Our Cap’n was probably somewhat underwhelmed by the change to his planned route as he was now faced with running (!) on tracks back to Fairholmes rather than fighting our way through bogs, rushes and heather to Pike Lowe.

We eight had started from Fairholmes, (legally parking for free, a bonus for Slow Warts) in the glorious evening sunset. It was a pleasure to welcome back Bob, Simon, Russ, Ann and some of the usual Slow Warts to our first climb up through the developing hawthorn forest to a rather boggy Hancock Pond. Our first dose of deep heather, uphill too, certainly warmed us up on our way towards Bamford House, remains of (?), and across Greystones Moss via the ”Tony Keddie” path, now becoming overgrown with, surprise, surprise, heather.

Is it luck, good navigation or local knowledge or even serendipity that leads us to a bracken disguised path around the hillside from the TK path to Cogman’s cabin? Whatever, it gave us a rather pleasant soft way to the there. The awakening of the torch lights reminded us, of course, that this was our last venture in Summertime so, in future, we will be mainly starting runs with torches blazing. The confines of this sheltered clough encouraged us to escape to the tops via the flats of Poynton Bog which seems to be losing its man-eating capabilities by drying out or are we getting used to higher levels of swampiness from other more serious outings?

We crossed the bog with relative ease though there was a gradual split in our group into four so it was a surprise to see a figure already at the summit of Lost Lad as we laboured our way there. The now torch-lit top guided us there to find Bob had been well ahead. He gave up going to Pike Lowe, it was getting late, and when the rest of us had gathered there, we also agreed to miss the pleasure of crossing more bog and heather.

Decision making at Lost Lad

It was a relatively fast descent with a final flourish up a short steep hill to prepare us for our trip to the YBI where there was a fine discussion on pubs and their demise and their quirks, The Trout at Redmires, the Britannia Inn at Elterwater, and several others were mentioned.
