As we started our Slow Warts’ outing, Andy put out a message about the snow on Skiddaw and ice on the beach in the Lakes where he was, and we’d also had news that Tom was enjoying the sun and his beach in warmer (19⁰C) southern parts of the world, miles from any hills. In the meantime, we ten (including returnees Michael, Louis, Ben and new Slow Wart, Paul) were in unfamiliar territory, starting from the centre of Hathersage having changed the start from Dennis Knoll because of icy roads. This didn’t affect the original planned route which had included a brief visit down to Hathersage.

Our resident Hathersagian, John, lead us up to the church from where we benefitted from the recent freezing (-4⁰C) of the swamp leading to the splendid gated stone portal to Moorseats. So, cracking on, our next challenge was the deep layer of leaves (!), then the Moorseats flagstones, clearly not maintaining our Harmerian standards (when the cat is away…….). We arguably redeemed ourselves slightly, past Kimber Court Farm by going up its screey track before reaching the icy path which we bravely tackled, to Carhead Rocks. Descending from the rocks, ice continued to test our balancing skills particularly at the frozen swamp near the former warden Bill’s gate; if you look carefully at its concrete foundations, you will see his name imprinted there, in his own hand (history in the making?)

We slipped again in roughing ourselves up by allowing our feet on some tarmac to the Stanage car park and then up a major path towards the Edge which we did not go onto. Instead, we traversed under it on an ever dwindling trod to the rocky foot of the Flying Buttress (I’m told) where we gathered for a group photo (minus Louis, plus Ben’s dog):

To extricate ourselves from this apparent impasse, we self-flagellated through bracken, no longer green and soft but brown and prickly, so, more redemption (!) before reaching a climbers trod to the Stanage Plantation where we struggled again through more deep layers of leaves. However warm and inviting North Lees (our next check point) looked, Ben informed us it was a cold house, from the experience of his friends who lived there. Nothing is at seems! A long, for us, field traverse finished at the church which John avoided via a short cut through a gap in the hedge making him way ahead in Hathersage, so, local knowledge does pay off.

We had stopped during our outing to decide on our post-run pub, The Millstone, not, you understand, for a rest during our strenuous activity. The pub was welcoming, mainly I suspect because the six of us were the only customers. Our discussions included the benign conditions we had enjoyed, the difficulties legless amputees faced particularly, the climbers, amazing.

As the last and only customers, we left to give the staff an early night declaring the run was a bit different to normal. Things will return next week to the usual when we start from Strines.

Thanks to all.

Graham

Our track thanks to Chris

What a contrast!
