Times in general seemed slower – mist and soggy ground – so course records stayed intact.

Borrowdale won again for the thirteenth time although it was close – just a few metres in it. Our open team were doing well – third after leg one – but then things started going wrong. Navigational errors on leg two and injury on the final leg saw their challege fade. Last minute changes to the team probably didn't help – more news to follow I'm sure from Rob.

Kirsty will illuminate the fate of the ladies team but again several late drop out saw us relying on the walking-wounded for at least one leg. The highlight was Zanthe and Liz who picked up fastest time on leg 2.

The vets finished a creditable 6th overall but missed out on a third consectutive victory thanks to a very strong Ambleside vets team. Mike and Dave pulled through the field after a rather relaxed start to finish 8th at Kirkstone. Me and Al overtook two teams but significantly it was Ambleside who came past us. We kept in touch for the first 30 minutes but it slipped away up the final climb ( Al would easily have kept with them I'm sure). As punishment for my inablility to ascend Al insisted on running back to patterdale – at the only speed it knows! Andy Barnett and Joe Blackett pulled away from Ambleside's open team but falied to make any impression on their vets and at patterdale we were 5 mins down. This turned to 8 minutes by the finish as Jon and John chased hard after Mark Rigby and John Atkinson. We were beaten by a better team basically. To do as well as we did, after unavailability and ilness robbed us of several top runners, was an acheivement in itself. – and well done to Ambleside on getting out a full strength team.

Excellent event as always. Thanks to all who helped to make it possible.

Results available at http://sportident.co.uk

MN

Wet, miserable, claggy in the lakes this morning – just how we like it!
