It’s mainly very fine short twigs (?) of rotted heather, bracken and bilberry which have to be teased out of my socks before washing them, it’s now a house rule to prevent contamination of the remaining washing! Whilst this is one disbenefit of wading through dense undergrowth, there is the benefit of some shade from the blazing sun shine under the more than head high bracken. This was little consolation as I swam (breaststroke was suggested) through the bracken near Upper Seal Clough from Fairbrook towards the “fourth” spring in the springs race. The ten of us were well spread out by now, some continuing further up Fairbrook and others going up the direct line but the cool spring water proved an irresistible attraction to all of us apart from Chris who sensibly decided on a less vegetated way up.

The nature of fell running means going up and, whilst the vegetation had subsided, the climb to Kinder edge was notoriously steep and like the terrain before involved no running and thankfully in the shade. I like to think there’s always a positive aspect to any hard stretch. Crossing Kinder was a breeze with good running through the now green, not peaty, groughs, some covered in willow herb to the Kinder River. However, there were complaints! Tom had not led us precisely to the Gates, we were, in fact, about 20m from them, sufficiently close for me.

                                                               Shady Kinder Gates

Such is the terrain usually covered by the Warts, that we rarely see other people and it is a measure of the success of the route that we see more wild life than people. After following the rather murky Kinder river on a path (!), we were faced with a crowd (to our eyes) at the Downfall, some drinking from the questionable waters there. This was not our first encounter with humans. Fairbrook was also crowded with them picnicking on the banks and paddling in the pools, seaside times! Back at the Downfall, we hurried on to pay our respects to an unusual feature near Sandy Heys, double trig points, one erect and respectfully climbed by Tom and one prostrate. Could this possibly be considered as an additional one to make the fifteen trigs round now the sixteen trigs round?

Somewhere on the edge of Kinder

Such speculation aside, there was now the business of getting back to Snake Bridge. In true Warts’ fashion we had had a significant attrition rate and the group of ten was down to just three with the others either ahead or on other routes having tasted the waters at the “first” spring. I miscalculated, i.e. went wrong, in thinking there was only a short bit of contouring around to the quad track from about the base of Fairbrook Naze to Snake Bridge. So, the last three of us enjoyed yet more heather bashing before finding the track and sprinting (!) to the finish.

We had survived heat, blinding sunshine, deep bracken, deep bilberry, deep heather, a very steep climb, a steep descent from the northern edge, crowds of people, bog, would you believe it, and as a finale, swarms of flying ants fortunately only on the descent when we could move reasonably quickly to minimise their annoyance. Afterwards, at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn, this was our overall conclusion. In other words, a marvellous and memorable Slow Warts’ evening. Oh, and there was a full moon rising on the way back to Sheffield.

Thanks to all.

Graham

Maybe it’s the heat, about 28⁰C, or part of the normal pattern of things, but there seems to be much dead vegetation left in my shoes and entangled in my socks after a Slow Warts’ outing.
