The Fellrunner race report, Winter 1987, includes:- “”The course consisted of 5 miles of bog up from Stronafyne Farm ( where we started) to Loch Sloy Dam. “
We had a good fast enough path, so perhaps Billy Bland’s record is the better result?
Also, “A few runners got nearly cragfast taking a direct line off Ben Vane, instead of contouring to the right…”
And:- “the final descent included several becks and short-cuts for the initiated” – so how much wisdom has been successfully handed down within Borrowdale, to get it prepared, learnt and carried out. That’s the way to do it!

There’s hard, very hard, and then this Arrochar Alps, by Loch Lomond. There was a longish run-out, a soul-destroying flat run-in, with 4 Munros shoved in the middle. We had the luxury of a flat section, across a dam wall. Pleased to say this was extremely well prepared and organised, as the race was distinctly serious had the rain and clag been down. There was an e-mail clearly stating the waterproof requirements : a Skyline-type kit check before getting the entry : counting runners at the start : Mountain Rescue on standby, probably having to aid a runner who’d crashed coming down the last hill: CP’s sensibly spaced out so that any missing runner could be better searched for : plenty of marshals each time, so that numbers could always be recorded whilst someone helped anyone in trouble. Excellent post-racerefreshments, with hot drinks and soup continually provided. Full credit to the organiser and Westerlands Club. As for the race, Ben Bardsley was first, Lloyd 5th. Not sure about others, but teams should have done well – the Men inevitably behind Borrowdale and hopefully the Ladies behind nobody. Photos.
Those near the end of the set give a good flavour of it all….

Importantly, congratulations to Rob Taylor, V60 Champion, having won decisively all three events.
I’m fiddling around with photos – here’s two of that last descent…

Saunders MM . results.
Wharfedale TTT –
Bollington.
Peak Forest.
Hathersage. – results.

Arrochar Alps. – results. 1987 was when the Men’s record was set.
