Although it was warm and dry down in New Mills, in the Lakes, on the other side of the front, we had rain, high winds and zero visibility for the whole day – not exactly what you want for a 22 mile race in complex geography! The winner’s time was over an hour outside Billy Bland’s record, and there were literally scores of drop-outs, with extremely slippery rock surfaces and high winds taking their toll. Afterwards there were great tales of folk descending from Scafell Pike into Piers Gill by mistake, visiting Pillar checkpoint twice and ascending to the Beck Head col only to find that it was Windy Gap … but I’m sure that these were only amusing in retrospect, not at the time! For myself, I was very happy just to finish without getting lost – picking up the prize for first in my age category was an added bonus! I think most of the codgers were resting in preparation for Holme Moss”.

Borrowdale Entries:- Substitutions are accepted, usually on the day.
