
  
{"id":2232,"date":"2009-01-06T19:00:38","date_gmt":"2009-01-06T19:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/?p=2232"},"modified":"2009-01-06T19:03:20","modified_gmt":"2009-01-06T19:03:20","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/2232","title":{"rendered":"Dropping in on Hades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/base-jumping-in-the-worlds-deepest-cave-shaft_1822.jpeg\" alt=\"base-jumping-in-the-worlds-deepest-cave-shaft_1822\" width=\"301\" height=\"175\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Although the risks of fell racing, particularly the OMM, are very small, many Dark Peakers have a taste for more dangerous pursuits such as rock climbing, mountaineering and paragliding, but as far as I know none of them are practitioners of BASE jumping.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But just how dangerous is it?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/short\/42\/6\/431\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\"> in the British Journal of Sports Medicine addressed some of the risks.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of an estimated 700 participants in 2002 there were 12 deaths or 1 in 60.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although the annual incidence was lower over the 1981-2006 period with 106 deaths the figure is likely to be incomplete and compares poorly to 1 in 9350 for skydivers in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Many of the deaths were due to difficulty controlling body position (\u2018freefall instability\u2019) due to the relatively low body speed and turbulence resulting in striking objects or failure to open the chute.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Acrobatics aren\u2019t good either. Parachute faults also led to deaths partly because back up chutes aren\u2019t generally used.
