Dr Bob has been reading a review of the evidence. (<em>McGrew and Martinez in Evidence based Sports Medicine BMJ Books 2002)<\/em><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Fever impairs performance, reducing muscle strength (<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/sites\/entrez?term=alluisi%20beisel%201980&amp;\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Alluisi et al 1980<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">) and increasing fluid loss.\u00a0\u00a0 There is evidence that viral illnesses reduce aerobic capacity and produce mild transient asthma (<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/7606517?ordinalpos=3&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Heir et al 1995<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">).\u00a0\u00a0 Muscle mass is also lost, a process that can take 5 times longer than the illness to replace.
