
  
{"id":2128,"date":"2008-01-28T18:25:49","date_gmt":"2008-01-28T18:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/?p=2128"},"modified":"2008-01-28T18:25:49","modified_gmt":"2008-01-28T18:25:49","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/2128","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font>To stretch or not to stretch?<font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/yogasingle36.jpeg\" title=\"yogasingle36.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/01\/yogasingle36.jpeg\" alt=\"yogasingle36.jpeg\" \/><\/a><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">We all \u2018know\u2019 that stretching is good for us, that it helps prevent injury, increases suppleness and improves performance.\u00a0 But like many other established facts in sport when you come to look for the evidence it is not there.\u00a0 Scientific studies often produce opposing results.\u00a0 This is partly due to bias in the way the study is designed but it is largely the result of chance.\u00a0 By combining the results from a large number of good studies it is possible to reduce this element of chance- a process known as a systematic review or meta analysis. <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov\/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1071358\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Shrier<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> and \u00a0<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/full\/325\/7362\/468\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Herbert and Gabriel<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> have done just this to determine if stretching prevents injury.\u00a0 <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Shrier found a total of 14 suitable studies.\u00a0 Stretching was helpful in 5 harmful in 3 and in 6 there was no difference.\u00a0 All 5 five positive studies also showed included warm ups with the stretching which may have been the reason for the benefit.
