
  
{"id":2109,"date":"2007-12-24T18:16:47","date_gmt":"2007-12-24T18:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2007-12-24T18:16:47","modified_gmt":"2007-12-24T18:16:47","slug":"","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dpfr.org.uk\/wp_dpfr\/2109","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/glass1.jpeg\" title=\"glass1.jpeg\"><\/a><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">W<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">ell Dr Bob has been very late with his December issue while he roots through the Christmas issues of the medical journals looking for stories to amuse and I hope enlighten you a little.\u00a0 <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p>Beware of the water<\/p>\n<p><\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/glass3.jpeg\" title=\"glass3.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dpfr.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/glass3.jpeg\" alt=\"glass3.jpeg\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">One that caught my eye\u00a0 was an article on medial myths in the British Medical Journal <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/cgi\/content\/short\/335\/7633\/1288\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">(1)<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">.\u00a0 While even the intelligent layman might not believe that hair and nails grow after death the canard that everyone should be drinking 8 glasses of water per day has become widespread.\u00a0 This has been repeated widely in both the press and by the purveyors of bottled water and \u2018sports drinks\u2019.\u00a0 Search for scientific evidence for this by unavailing but they did find\u00a0 a 1945 recommendation that 2.5 litres of water was required by the \u2018average\u2019 person (presumably with in \u2018average\u2019 temperature, humidity and physical exertion) but the sentence continued with the\u00a0 statement that most of this was contained in the food of a normal diet!\u00a0 Drinking like breathing is best left to the prompting of the body- drink when you are thirsty especially when there is beer of offer!\u00a0 Drinking because you are told to, particlualry during exercise\u00a0or because it is fashionable leads to hyponatraemia collapse and possible death<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/publicaffairs.uth.tmc.edu\/hleader\/archive\/Exercise_Fitness\/2003\/runnersbeware-0710.html\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">(2)<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\">.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\">A reader has provided the following interesting little contribution and suggested that maybe smoking might not be so bad for you.
