Hunter Wreck Race – Andy Harmer writes…
On a wild night 20 runners set out up the very boggy track to the cabins and on past the new cross [remains of] on what was once a very busy pack horse trail, in search of the Hunter Wreck [or more precisely the pond above the plane].The way back is fairly long and the last hill [the only one!] is below the lights of Ones moor farms/house, making it rare to see in the dark.
With times reflecting the blustery night, and the heavy going under foot, Tim Hawley’s improvement on last year was perhaps the star run of the night.
Simon gave Tom a run for his money and it was good to have 3 women out, including Ruth who used to grace the Warts stage many a year ago. The enthusiasm in the pub and at the finish either reflected joy at getting round or the euphoria at being out on such a challenging and esoteric course. It looks like this early October night race has plenty of legs left in it.
Langdale – Sunny with a breeze in the valley before the race started but, by the time runners were on the higher ground beyond Esk Hause they were treated to torrential rain, hail and a gale. 59 of the 298 starters failed to finish. None of this stopped Finlay Wild cruising round in a hugely impressive 2 hours 6 minutes and 48 seconds. With Finlay Grant 5th, Joe Woodley 12th and David Lewis 15th, Dark Peak men were 3rd team.
