Bradwell on Wednesday 8th August 1990

Nearly a month at over 10,000ft must have done me some good but I had plenty of excuses ready? one run in the last five weeks ( a flat four miles at 11,000ft above sea level!), an unsteady stomach, and jet-lag from the previous day's flight back from South America. In the end it was 'no-contest', the jet-lag won by about three miles!

To the top of the hill it all seemed quite easy. I was used to steep hills and walking and the easy breathing helped me to the top. Then my problems started, I had to run, something which all but my lungs severely objected to. By the time I reached the track and the descent even finishing was starting to seem only a probability rather than a certainty. Familiar faces came and went, all shaking off my feeble attempts to keep up.

At last, the final half mile arrived and with it came Jim Fulton. Fixing my eyes on the brown vest before me I hung on to the finish, dipping out of the slipstream for the last few yards which must have really pleased Jim.

The moral of the story; altitude training requires altitude... AND training!
